WORKSHOPS AT CHLEMOUTSI CASTLE

An information workshop was successfully held on Friday, June 16, 2023, at Chlemoutsi Castle, within the project ‘Coastal Heritage Network’ (CoHeN), part of the transnational European Territorial Cooperation Programme Interreg V-A Greece – Italy 2014–2020. The information workshop was organised by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia, which participates in the programme with the project “Consolidation, restoration and enhancement of hall A3 of Chlemoutsi Castle” with a total budget of 427,190.00€.

The workshop aimed to present and promote the Adriatic – Ionian Coastal Route, connecting important monuments of the historical heritage of Greece and Italy through a series of targeted interventions in forts, castles, historical towers and lighthouses along the coasts of the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic (a total of 17 monuments, 11 in Greece and 6 in Italy).

The workshop, attended by tourism professionals, local bodies and many teachers, was introduced by the Head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia, Mrs Erofili – Iris Kollia, who briefly presented the project “Coastal Heritage Network” and the monuments of Greece and Italy involved in it. Then Mrs Athanasia Ralli, Head of the Department of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Antiquities and Museums of Ilia, gave a brief historical and archaeological overview of the site and museum of Chlemoutsi Castle.

The workshop programme continued with the presentation of the educational game and the educational booklet edited by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia within the joint actions of the project, in cooperation with the other partners of the programme (Ephorates of Antiquities of Aetolia-Acarnania and Lefkas, Thesprotia, Corfu and the Region of Apulia).

The event was completed with an experiential approach to the game with the enthusiastic participation of children aged 10-15, who worked together, practised their critical thinking, and pleasantly gained knowledge about monuments of Greece and Italy. The teachers present had the opportunity to understand the game that will be available as a museum kit to the educational community from the school year 2023-2024, while all participants received the educational book.
