The event “Build your stance like a castle…, A route through the history of the castles and fortresses of Corfu”, was held with great success on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at the piazza of the south bastion of the Old Fortress. The event took place within the Coastal Heritage Network (CoHeN) project, funded under Interreg V-A Greece-Italy Programme 2014-2020, in which the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corfu participates with the project “Fortress Network of Corfu”.
Τhe history of the island’s castles and fortresses was presented with the narration of the actress Natalia Capodistria, framed with musical themes selected from the rich Greek musical tradition, by the musical group “In the steps of tradition”.
The narration included the history of the castles and fortresses of Corfu from the ancient and medieval times to the modern era, with special references to the circumstances that resulted in their erection, the sieges of Corfu by the Ottomans and the events that determined the fate of Corfu’s fortifications during the 19th century. Quotations from original sources enriched the narration, highlighting the meaning of Corfu’s fortifications both for the island’s rulers and the Corfiots.
Τhe event aimed to promote the public awareness regarding the protection and enhancement of the castles and fortresses of Corfu and aspired to establish a communication channel with the public, in view of the actions that will follow within the CoHeN project. Moreover, the event –which took place in an area of the fortress that is closed to the public- intended to support the valorisation of the Old Fortress as a place of culture. Finally, it aimed to promote the valorisation of the Adriatic-Ionian Coastal Route, of which the Old Fortress, along with the New Fortress, Angelokastro, Gardiki and Kassiopi Castle, constitutes a landmark.
